This week, hydrogen didn't just perform well somewhere. It won outright up against every other option out there, and not in some category built just for clean tech.
Hi, I'm Steve Hill, CEO of NewHydrogen, with this week's top hydrogen news. Before we dive in, here's a quick update on our progress in our mission to produce the world's cheapest clean hydrogen. Our ThermoLoop® engineering test unit is under construction, and we're continuing to work with NuCube Energy to evaluate their next-generation nuclear reactor as a heat source for the process. First up, in southern Germany, three hydrogen fuel cell trucks from MAN just wrapped up the final phase of a real-world pilot. Over three straight months, they hauled actual freight between Munich, Dachau, and Nuremberg for a logistics company on regular routes in regular conditions.
MAN is calling it the final phase of the Bayern Flotte project, backed by the Bavarian state government, and it's built to answer a simple question: Can a hydrogen truck hold up to the daily grind of commercial use, not just a demo run? Early results say yes.
Next, some sobering numbers out of Europe. Clean hydrogen production costs are climbing again this year as electricity and gas prices push higher, making fuel less competitive against older, dirtier alternatives. Analysts tracking the market say marginal production costs are now rising week over week, which puts real pressure on any project that hasn't already locked in cheap power.
It's a good reminder that most of the industry is still tied to the same underlying problem. Hydrogen made through electrolysis lives and dies by the price of electricity.
Last story for today, an update on one we touched on a while back. Feadship's hydrogen-powered superyacht called Breakthrough just won Motor Yacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards in Venice. When we first mentioned this boat, it was still an ambitious concept: 119 meters, running on cryogenic liquid hydrogen fuel cells. Now, it's not just built and sailing. It's being recognized as the best yacht in the world. Not just the best clean yacht, the best yacht overall. That's the kind of validation that's hard to argue with.
Freight trucks, an industry watching its power bill, and the fanciest boat in the water. Different worlds, but the same underlying story. None of it scales the way it should until clean hydrogen gets cheap to produce.
